So what you're saying is... I can still clutter my base folder with shadow.pk3 and don't really need to delete it? *Continues to clutter Base*
The main issue with keeping it is, the Coruscant skybox will be overridden in other maps that use it.
[Suggestion / Request / Begging for the archive] Description: - To use a simple version system method. Procedure: 4 Simple steps. - Calling the PK3 files diferently from one release to another, i.e: Shadow_Fortress.1.0.pk3 Shadow_Fortress.1.1.pk3 Shadow_Fortress.1.2.pk3 Shadow_Fortress.1.3.pk3 . And so on... - Calling the BSP files diferently from one release to another, i.e: Shadow_Fortress_1.0.bsp Shadow_Fortress_1.1.bsp Shadow_Fortress_1.2.bsp Shadow_Fortress_1.3.bsp . And so on... - Renaming the maps in the arena to be different, i.e: For: Shadow_Fortress_1.0.bsp Code: { map "shadow_fortress_1.0" longname "^5S^7hadow ^5F^7ortress" type "ffa duel team ctf powerduel"
} For: Shadow_Fortress_1.1.bsp Code: { map "shadow_fortress_1.1" longname "^5S^7hadow ^5F^7ortress 1.1" type "ffa duel team ctf powerduel"
} , etc. - Remove the old PK3 from the server, that way you encourage people to download the new one. - Reason: To preserve. What does this means? In order to properly play a demo recorded in an event, we need to have the map exactly as it was when the map was played. Let me give you an example from my own experience: When I was in Cjs, we had an early version of Cjs_CouncilV2, I recorded a few demos there and when the mapper released the final version of the map, he called the PK3 exactly as It was, with the time, everyone replaced that old file, even the mapper removed it, when I tried to play the old demos to record something, I wasn't able to because the old map was lost forever, nobody made a copy of it. Edit, Rayce asked me "why not just keep the old file" (somewhere I suposse), here is why: If we just keep an old file to be able to play demos, we actually need to remember which PK3 comes with which demo, that can be achieved by creating a folder called "demos" somewhere and place the demos wit a copy of his own working version of the map. THAT is tedious and annoying, while we could do this the right way (as I see it), with a version system.
I second what C4N posted. Do not see a reason why we shouldn't just use the version system. I mean, that's how most professionals do it, and having a version 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and so on makes it look more organized. You could even expand the map thread and link the old version as well, just to preserve the history of the map. If you just have a map that's always of the same name then it gets confusing when someone has an old version of it. For example the map gets an update and some of the members don't know it did, now if the map is always of the same name, that player will join the server and will be able to see people going through walls that are actually other rooms which he cannot see because he's using the old version of the map. Now if we use the version system and actually delete the old versions from the server, people with an outdated version of the map will be forced to get a new one, the game would even tell you that you need for example Shadow_Fortress_1.2 and so on.
That goes under the idea that the changes to the map are significant enough to have an impact on the recording, which I doubt because the only major change to the layout of the map in months was the updated tag team arena. The rest of the updates have been minor bug fixes, cosmetic changes and/or additions, that shouldn't have any effect on any recordings made after December. Ergo, you shouldn't need to keep every single version.
Okay, first of all, this map wasn't even supposed to be released until now, technically. That's why I kept needing to update it over and over. We needed a Tag Team arena so I released it early to use. Calling it shadow.pk3 was just my quick way of naming it. Back when we had 4-5 members it wasn't that big of a deal. Now the development got way behind as the clan grew. Now it's at a decent point that I'm calling it a 1.0 release. But we really just have a tag team arena and some duel rooms. So yes, I changed the name of the map file and pk3 to what it will be from now on. That won't change again. You don't have to delete the old one. I'm not holding a gun to your head to force you. If you have demos from that map, keep the pk3. The old pk3 was already removed from the server. You guys are being a bit dramatic about this whole ordeal. You don't have to worry about anything other than downloading a future version of the map when I post one. I won't be posting any updates until it's actually worth downloading, from now on.
